ABOUT US

Trinity United Methodist Church is a community of faith actively pursuing the heart of Christ which is to love God and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. (Matthew 22:37-40) And we often find that the BEST way to love God, IS to love our neighbor. Our immigrant neighbor, our refugee neighbor, our non-binary neighbor, our atheist neighbor, or any other kind of neighbor you can think of.

At Trinity we welcome, affirm, and offer the love of Christ to all people who have been hurt and rejected by hurtful and hateful expressions of the church, especially LGBTQIA+ people. We welcome and love all people because Jesus welcomed and loved all people. At Trinity ALL, truly means, ALL.

Currently Trinity has one worship service at 10 am on Sunday mornings. During worship you can expect to hear a variety of different musical styles including more contemporary music from our praise band, beautiful anthems from our chancel choir, booming hymns from our Casavant pipe organ, the voices of our future in the Children’s Choir, as well as our handbell choir and all sorts of different orchestral arrangements. We would describe our worship as truly blended. We celebrate all of the varied musical expressions that enhance our connection to God and each other.

Our services average between 60-75 minutes most Sundays. This can vary based on what is happening in the service.

The only dress code at Trinity is that you wear clothing of some type.  What that clothing is should be whatever you are comfortable in. We have people who come in suits and dresses, and we have people who come in jeans, a t-shirt, and flip flops. Most Sundays our pastor will be leading worship in khakis and a t-shirt. When we gather it isn’t a fashion show it is a time to connect authentically with God and each other and we believe that happens best when everyone feels comfortable in their attire.

If you are simply visiting Trinity there is NO expectation of you giving financially to the church. If that is something you wish to do there are several ways that can be done. You can go to our website grtumc.org and give through the giving portal on our website. During the service when the offering is called for, music will play and people will walk up to the front of the church and place their offering in the basket. We also encourage people to fill out connection cards and place them in the basket as well. That way no one has to feel awkward if they give online or are a visitor who is not ready to give financially to the work of Trinity. If neither of those options work for you there is always mailing in your offering. You can mail your offering to Trinity United Methodist Church 1100 Lake Drive SE Grand Rapids, MI 49506. We are grateful for gift of your presence with us and your financial generosity.

Several years ago, Trinity updated it’s language around the idea of “Sunday School”. The term we currently use is “Faith Formation”. This is a more accurate term as the goal of Faith Formation is not to indoctrinate those who attend but rather to give them the tools to explore and grow in their faith.

Faith Formation happens on most Sundays between September and May beginning at 11:30am. Adults experience a variety of Faith Formation topics throughout the year. It could be a 6-week book study on a particular topic, a study based on the current sermon series, a guest speaker from any number of organizations engaged in social justice work, and other topics based on the current needs in our community and world.

Our youth (6th - 12th grade) gather with our youth director and other qualified adults for a time of fellowship and conversation. Typically, the conversation looks to examine the scripture and sermon that they just heard from the pastor and further refine the ideas to how they might affect the lives of people their age. They have time to share about their weeks, play pool or video games, burn off some energy in the gym, and plan for future youth events.

For children in Kindergarten - 5th grade we have two programs for them almost every Sunday. During the worship service (after the children’s message from our pastor) children can choose to go upstairs and take part in our Children and Worship program. If your child prefers not to take part in that they can return to sit with their grownups or play quietly in our pray-ground at the back of the sanctuary. After the service, at 11:30am our Trinity Kids time begins and that is a time for supervised play in our gym and other child friendly spaces around the church. This ends at 12:30pm like the rest of our Faith Formation so that children and youth can reconnect with their grownups at that time.

For our youngest children our nursery is open and fully staffed from 8:30am - 12:30pm. Please not that we have NO problem if young children are in the worship space and make noise. Crying is totally okay. The nursery is there to help the grownups if that makes them more comfortable.

Trinity has hot coffee and a variety of snacks available in the parlor behind the sanctuary on Sunday mornings starting at 9:30 am and going until 11:45am. There is coffee, tea, and water available as well as bagels and fruit. Feel free to bring your beverages into the sanctuary for worship.

Trinity celebrates an open table. That means you do not have to be a member of Trinity, or any other church, to be welcome to receive the sacrament. All those who are seeking Christ are welcome at the table. Our communion bread is 100% gluten free. It is important to us that there are no barriers for anyone at Christ’s table. Our Pastor will give more specific instructions about how to receive the bread and cup during the service.
